Sunday Sports Update

Top: Saturday's Section VI Class B-2 quarterfinal showdown between Fredonia and Cleveland Hill went down to the wire on Saturday, and it was the Hillbillies who came up big in the crucial moments; none more so than when Ashton Putney (left) was fouled and sent to the free throw line with 23.5 seconds remaining.  With Fredonia leading 53-52 and in a one-and-one situation, the sophomore got the job done, sinking two shots to put his team up by three.  The Billies were able to celebrate (right) after two potential game-tying threes by Cleveland Hill missed, sealing a dramatic 55-52 win.  Fredonia will take on Newfane at Buffalo State on Thursday in the Class B-2 semifinals.  Photos by Greg Larson

Bottom left: Jeff Skinner and the Buffalo Sabres are in the thick of a playoff race in the Eastern Conference.  Today marks a critical point in that chase, as the Sabres square off with the Washington Capitals this afternoon at the KeyBank Center.  Both teams enter the day with 64 points, just one point outside the conference's final wild card spot.  The Sabres enter the contest winners of their last two games.  Photo by the Buffalo Sabres

Bottom right: Former Dunkirk High School football coach Mike Sarratori has landed a new heading coaching job.  WNY Athletics reports that Sarratori has become the new head coach of the Eden/North Collins varsity football program.  Sarratori's last season with Dunkirk came in the COVID-shortened spring 2021 season.  His greatest success with the Marauders came in 2016, when they won a Section VI title in Class B.
