Sunday Sports Update -- March 5, 2023

Fredonia holds off late rally to bring home Section VI hoops title...Sabres pick up key win over Tampa Bay...and the first two tickets punched to the Big Dance.  Greg Larson has more details on today's Sunday Sports Update...

Sunday Sports Update

Top: A third Section VI boys basketball title in eight seasons.  That's what Fredonia earned on Saturday at the Buffalo State Sports Arena, where the Hillbillies upset top seed Salamanca 58-54 in the Class B-2 championship game.  All five Fredonia starters scored in the 1st quarter, led by Ethan Fry (left), who finished the day with 15 points.  But it was Davion White who came up with the biggest bucket of the game.  White, who scored the last four points of Fredonia's B-2 semifinal win over Newfane on Thursday, came up with the goods again; after Salamanca cut a 21-point Fredonia lead down to two, White (right) got fouled on a successful layup and made the subsequent free throw with 16.1 seconds remaining to help seal the win for the Billies.  Photos by Greg Larson

Bottom left: Five different Buffalo Sabres found the next in a crucial victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday.  Among them was Tyson Jost, who got his tally in the 2nd period, part of a string of five unanswered goals as the Sabres won 5-3 at the KeyBank Center.  The Sabres begin today three games out of a wild card spot in the Eastern Conference standings.  Photo by the Buffalo Sabres

Bottom right: It's the month of March, and that can only mean madness in the air, as college hoops teams fight for a spot in the NCAA Tournament.  The first two tickets to the Big Dance were punched on Saturday.  One of those teams to make it was Southeast Missouri State, who is going dancing for the first time in 23 years after defeating Tennessee Tech in a dramatic overtime game to win the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament.  Photo by Southeast Missouri State University
