A Dunkirk man is facing a plethora of charges after he led police on a vehicle pursuit in the city early Sunday morning. According to Dunkirk Police, a vehicle was seen striking a parked vehicle in the 400 block of Washington Avenue shortly before 4:00 AM. Officers tried to stop the vehicle driven by 39-year-old Ramon Ramos, but he allegedly failed to comply. Officers say the vehicle proceeded to strike a tree and a light pole at a local business, then drive through a city-owned field, causing damage to the field. Police say the vehicle was dragging the tree that had previously been struck. The pursuit ended when Ramos' vehicle struck a handrail, causing it to overturn and come to rest on its passenger side in the area of North Main Street and Lakefront Boulevard. Ramos was taken into custody without incident and transported by Dunkirk Fire to Brooks Memorial Hospital for evaluation. Officers say further investigation determined that Ramos had also caused damage to two other parked vehicles in the 400 block of Washington Avenue. Ramos was charged with seven counts of 4th-degree criminal mischief, one count of 3rd-degree unlawfully fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle, and numerous vehicle and traffic tickets. Police say Ramos was released due to New York State's bail reform law.
