Eight officers were injured in separate inmate attacks that occurred three days apart at the Collins Correctional Facility.
According to the New York State Correctional Officers & Police Benevolent Association (NYSCOPBA), the first incident happened on May 2nd, when a corrections officer found a "visibly intoxicated" inmate on the floor and screaming incoherently. As the inmate was being carried down a stairwell, the inmate allegedly struck one officer in the upper body and grabbed the hands and wrists of another officer. The two officers suffered knee and hand injuries and were also exposed to an unknown substance. Both were treated at an area hospital.
On May 5th, six officers suffered multiple injuries and required treatment at outside hospitals after an attack by a 51-year-old inmate. According to NYSCOPBA, the incident happened after officers inspected the inmate's cell and found it to be noncompliant with facility rules. When ordered to return to his cell, the inmate allegedly charged at officers and struck one in the mouth. Three officers responded with a body hold and forced him to the ground, where he allegedly put an officer in a headlock while punching and tried to assault other prison staff. The six officers involved in that incident were treated for elbow, shoulder, knee, hip, shin, hand, and facial injuries. NYSCOPBA adds that the inmate is currently serving a sentence of 10-12 years after he was convicted in New York City for 1st-degree criminal contempt and 1st-degree assault.
