Six corrections officers at the Collins Correctional Facility were hospitalized following a violent attack by an inmate at the prison earlier this month. According to the New York State Correctional Officers and Police Benevolent Association (NYSCOBPA), the incident occurred on July 11th, when one officer saw that an inmate had covered the window of his cell door, preventing staff from visually confirming his condition. After numerous unsuccessful attempts to gain the inmate's compliance, staff opened the cell door, and the inmate rushed out and violently attacked responding officers in an apparent attempt to fight his way free. He allegedly repeatedly threw punches at staff, striking several officers. After officers unsuccessfully used pepper spray, staff used body holds to bring the inmate to the ground. He allegedly continued to punch and kick officers until he was finally secured in handcuffs and leg restraints. According to NYSCOPBA, the six injured officers were treated for injuries that included facial injuries, a broken nose, and injuries to their arms, hands, wrists, knees, ankles, elbows and shoulders. The 31-year-old inmate is currently serving a 21-year sentence after being convicted in New York City for 1st- and 2nd-degree assault, as well as 1st- and 2nd-degree robbery. He was also convicted in 2023 for a brutal gang attack on a rival gang while incarcerated at Rikers Island.
