Big Plays Propel CSP to Gridiron Victory Over Fredonia

The home team's ability to make big plays was the difference in Saturday's high school football clash between Class C South rivals Fredonia and Clymer-Sherman-Panama. In a game broadcast on WDOE, the Wolfpack tallied five touchdowns of longer than 30 yards as they routed the Hillbillies by a 40-8 score at Sherman's Harry W. Brosius Field.

Two of those scoring plays came in the game's opening quarter. Senior Blake Beckerink broke off a 70-yard touchdown run on the second play, then Johnathyn Abers hauled in a 42-yard touchdown reception to give CSP (2-0, 1-0) a 16-0 advantage. Beckerink then added a second long touchdown run in the 2nd quarter, taking off down the sideline for an 84-yard romp. Meanwhile, Fredonia (1-1, 0-1) drove three times into Wolfpack territory in the first half, but had no points to show for it offensively. The Billies did get on the board before halftime when Max Cuthbert and Ayden Wronski teamed up to tackle Dylan Kriner in his own end zone for a safety, making the score 24-2. In the 3rd quarter, Hayden Sexton scored a 58-yard touchdown on a misdirection play to stretch the CSP lead to 32-2. Fredonia answered with its lone scoring drive of the afternoon -- a five-play, 66-yard march that culminated with a 15-yard touchdown run by Markel Davis. The Wolfpack were quick to respond, as Abers found paydirt on a 32-yard run, then punctuated the scoring with CSP's fifth two-point conversion.

Offensively, CSP amassed 425 total yards, while Fredonia managed 275 yards. Blake Beckerink led all ball carriers with 10 rushes for 194 yards for the Wolfpack in addition to his two touchdowns. Johnathyn Abers, along with his two touchdowns, added 105 yards from scrimmage in his team's winning effort. For Fredonia, sophomore Noah Palisin completed 19 out of 27 passes for 205 yards and a pair of interceptions. Lavonce Donaldson caught seven balls for 68 yards, and Brayden Korzeniewski made four catches for 93 yards.
