As the month of October nears, the Northern Chautauqua Community Foundation is getting ready for the start of its 7th annual drive where warm new socks are collected for distribution to needy individuals and families. NCCF says the need is more significant than ever for Socktober, with rising costs and increased homelessness leaving many without those basic necessities. Throughout the month, NCCF will accept donations in collaboration with Cattaraugus County Bank's Dunkirk location and Lake Shore Savings Bank's branches in Dunkirk, Fredonia and Westfield. Other drop-off locations, including including individual classrooms, clubs, businesses and congregations, continue to participate in Socktober sock collections throughout the county.
Last year, thousands of socks were distributed through Chautauqua County Rural Ministry, the Homeless Coalition, Meals on Wheels, Jamestown YWCA, Boys and Girls Club, St. Gianna Molla, Mental Health Association, St. Susan Center, and other helping organizations.
NCCF says residents can help by doing the following:
- Dropping off new socks at designated collection points throughout Chautauqua County. Look for Socktober collection bins at partnering businesses and organizations.
- Encouraging your workplace, book club, school or organization to host a sock drive.
- Share the news about Socktober on social media by using the hashtag #SOCKTOBER and encouraging friends, family, and followers to get involved.
