Lawrence "Larry" Scura, Jr., 82, of Waterloo, IA died at his home under hospice care on Sunday, March 29, 2026. He was born on June 2, 1943 in Gowanda, the son of Lawrence Sr., and Irma (Nehrboss) Scura.
Larry graduated from Gowanda High School in 1961 and obtained his Bachelor's degree from the University at Buffalo before completing his education with a Master's degree from Cornell University.
Larry married Rebecca A. "Becky" Welcher on December 22, 1996. She preceded him in death on October 7, 2020.
He worked for the Engineering Department at John Deere for 23 years, retiring on December 31, 2000.
Larry was a member of the Rocky Mountain Elks Foundation; John Deere Collector's Club; Pony Express; Iowa Youth Benefit Saddle Club; Aspire; 4-H; FFA; NRA; Pheasants Forever; Ducks Unlimited; and the Iowa Professional Farriers Association, for which he was recently recognized with an Honorary Lifetime Membership award.
In his free time, he enjoyed rodeos, hunting, fishing, and going to the shooting range.
Larry is survived by a stepdaughter, Sherry (Jason) Klemke of Janesville, IA; three stepgrandchildren, Kailah (Joshua) Willms of Lawrence, KS, Cody Davenport of Sumner, IA and Josie (Hunter Pierce) Klemke of La Porte City, IA; three stepgreat-grandchildren, Vincent, Vera and Wynter; an uncle, John Scura of Rochester; many cousins; his devoted caregivers; and his beloved horse, Zoey. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Lynn Scura.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 2 at 11:00 AM at Locke at Tower Park, 4140 Kimball Avenue, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery, both in Waterloo, IA. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to services at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Pony Express or Easter Seals.
