Michael L. Rosing

Michael L. Rosing, 86, of Dunkirk passed away Saturday evening, April 4, 2026 at the Chautauqua Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. He was born on February 8, 1940 and was the husband of Barbara (Mackowiak) Rosing and son of Bodamer and Margaret (Altwies) Rosing.

A graduate of Dunkirk High School in 1957, Michael joined the United States Navy, where he served with honor from 1958-1961. Following active duty, he dedicated an additional 20 years in the Naval Reserves, embodying a strong sense of patriotism and pride in his service.

Following his military career, Michael devoted 37 years to National Fuel, where he worked as a serviceman until his well-earned retirement.

Michael's love of nature was evident in his lifelong commitment to conservation. He was deeply involved with numerous organizations, including the Northern Chautauqua Conservation Club, the Lake Erie Salmon and Trout Association, Ducks Unlimited, and the Dunkirk Harbor Commission. His notable achievements in these spheres culminated in his induction into the New York State Sportsman Hall of Fame, a recognition earned through his groundbreaking Duck banding project in Dunkirk Harbor. Over his lifetime, Michael banded nearly 20,000 ducks and geese, contributing invaluable data to conservation efforts and showcasing his passion for wildlife preservation.

Michael’s character was defined by humility and a profound sense of family values. He loved his sons and grandchildren dearly, finding joy and fulfillment in their company and support. His contributions to his community and environment have left a lasting legacy admired by many.

Survivors include his loving wife of 59 years, Barbara (Mackowiak) Rosing; sons, Frederick (Brenda Symans) Rosing and David (Sarah) Rosing; grandchildren, Hannah, Hayden and Gunnar Rosing; siblings, Patricia (late Frederick) Kalfas, Susan (late Louis) Gugino and Charles (Linda) Rosing; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Michael is preceded in death by his sister, Mary Stevens; and his brother, Frederick Rosing.

Relatives and friends are welcome to attend calling hours on Wednesday, April 8 from 2:00-4:00 PM at the McGraw-Kowal Funeral Home, 736 Central Avenue in Dunkirk. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, April 9 at 10:00 AM at Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, 1032 Central Avenue in Dunkirk. Entombment will be held in Holy Trinity Cemetery Mausoleum.
