Herbert C. Cook, age 93, passed away Saturday evening, April 11, 2026 at Bertrand Chaffee Hospital in Springville, where he had been admitted the previous day. He was born in North Collins on January 28, 1933, the only child to Herbert and Adeline (Eckhert) Cook.
Herbert graduated from North Collins Central School, Class of 1951. After graduation, he enlisted with the United States Army, honorably serving his country during the Korean War. He married the former June Hancock in North Collins on September 15, 1958. Herb retired from the New York State Department of Transportation as a foreman. After retirement, Herb continued with his passion of auto mechanics. He could fix anything, and had the skill of being a brilliant troubleshooter to anything brought to him. He skills went beyond auto mechanics and could be considered or referred to as MacGyver when it came to building a part from scratch or duplicated a part no longer available. Many people in town have seen his Radio Flyer (wagon) automobile he built; this vehicle was seen in many parades and was enjoyed by many car show enthusiasts. Herb and June moved to their "country home" in the Town of Collins from North Collins. They surrounded themselves with good neighbors that were considered their extended family.
Herb was the loving husband of June A. (Hancock) Cook of nearly 68 years. His passing will be felt by many in the community and a major loss; he will be missed.
