Saturday Sports Update
Top: It wasn't the prettiest way to win, but Fredonia did get a win on the first night of the 2019 high school football season, defeating Gowanda 21-0 at Fredonia's Orange Bowl on Friday. Sophomore quarterback Nick Whitfield (left) threw for 144 yards and a touchdown and added a pair of 12-yard touchdown runs in the victory. Whitfield's 15-yard touchdown pass to junior Tyler Putney (right) with 9:56 remaining sealed the victory. Photos by Ron Szot
Bottom left: More drama surrounding Oakland Raiders wide receiver Antonio Brown. The NFL has announced late this morning that the Raiders have released Brown after a week full of controversy that included him getting into a confrontation with General Manager Mike Mayock. ESPN reports that Brown was fined more than $215,000 stemming from that incident. Photo by USA Today
Bottom right: Domingo German, who leads the New York Yankees' pitching staff with 17 wins this season, struggled on Friday in a 6-1 loss at Boston. German lasted only 4 1/3 innings and allowed five runs on three hits and four walks. Photo by USA Today
