Players expected to reject latest offer in MLB proposal...a Brooklyn Nets star urging NBA players to sit out season restart...and no fan attendance expected for Bills preseason games. More details from Greg Larson on today's Saturday Sports Update...
Saturday Sports Update
Top left: As Major League Baseball stadiums remain empty amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the league and its Players Association remain at a standstill in negotiations for a 2020 season. The MLBPA has until Sunday to accept a recent counteroffer of a season consisting of 70-75 games and prorated salaries of 80%. However, ESPN reports that the players are expected to reject that offer and make a counteroffer of their own on or before the Sunday deadline.
Top right: The NBA plans to restart its season in Orlando towards the end of July, but it appears that superstar Kyrie Irving has some issues with the league's plan. ESPN reports that the Brooklyn Nets guard, who has been a prominent voice in the league's Players Association, has been vocal about having players sit out the season restart. Irving cites the recent social justice movement that was sparked by the police-involving killing of George Floyd on Memorial Day.
Bottom: Uncertainty remains for Buffalo Bills fans who want to attend regular season games at New Era Field in 2020, and it does not appear that there will be any fans in attendance at the Bills' home preseason games this year. That's according to Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul, who made the announcement while touring businesses in Jamestown on Friday. Hochul adds that New York State is committed to getting its sports teams up and running, but she does not expect there to be crowds anytime soon.
