Saturday Sports Update
Top: A look at two of the newest members of the Buffalo Sabres. On Friday, the Sabres selected University of Michigan defenseman Owen Power (left) with the 1st overall pick in the NHL Draft. It was part of a very busy day for the Sabres, who also traded defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen to the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for the 14th overall pick (used to pick Swedish forward Isak Rosen), plus a 2nd-round pick in 2023. The trade also resulted in the Sabres acquiring defenseman Robert Hagg (right). Owen Power photo by the University of Michigan, Robert Hagg photo by NHL.com
Bottom left: Cleveland's Major League Baseball franchise has chosen its new nickname. On Friday, the team announced that starting next season, it will change its nickname from the Indians to the Guardians, following years of complaints from Native American groups over the Indians nickname, which has been in existence since 1915. The new nickname was inspired by two statues that flank both ends of a bridge in Cleveland.
Bottom right: Following a 3-0 loss earlier in the week to Sweden, the USA women got a much-needed soccer win on Day 1 of the Olympics. Team USA routed New Zealand 6-1 in its second group stage game of the 2020 games in Japan and will face Australia on Tuesday. Photo by the U.S. Women's National Soccer Team
