Saturday Sports Update

Top: The New York Yankees have been on a mission so far this season, and their hot play continued Friday night in Toronto.  The Bronx Bombers scored eight runs in the 5th inning to break open the game and rout the Blue Jays 12-3.  Anthony Rizzo's grand slam capped the inning and was one of three round-trippers off Yankee bats in the frame.  The Yanks currently have the best record in all of Major League Baseball at 48-16.  Photo by USA Today

Bottom left: The Fredonia State men's hockey program is in some trouble with the NCAA.  This week, the organization's Division III Committee on Infractions found that head coach Jeff Meredith violated NCAA rules when he used a physical education course to engage in off-ice conditioning with student-athletes before the first permissible practice date.  The program has been put on two years probation and fined $1,500, while Meredith has been suspended from all ice hockey-related activities for three months, among other punishments levied by the NCAA.  Photo by SUNY Fredonia

Bottom right: Fredonia High School's softball team this week had four players named to the CCAA Division 1 West First Team for this past season.  Among them was sophomore Jordan Lucas, shown here batting during the Section VI Class B-2 championship game against Eden.  The other three first-teamers for the Class B-2 champs included Lila Cameron, Erin Schrantz and Gabriela Matos.  File photo
