Over 35,000 fans show up for Blue & Red Practice...Yankees lose on 8th-inning double in St. Louis...and a 12-year-old cancer survivor from Dunkirk spends a day with the Bills. More details from Greg Larson on today's Saturday Sports Update...
Saturday Sports Update
Top: The Buffalo Bills haven't even played their first preseason game yet, and they got to see hordes of fans show up for the team's practice at Highmark Stadium on Friday. A total of 35,911 fans were in attendance for the annual Return of the Blue & Red Practice. To veterans of the team like Josh Allen (left), the tradition is nothing new; meanwhile, newcomers like Von Miller (right) got to take in this experience for the first time. Miller was impressed with the turnout, telling reporters afterwards that "it's easy to fall in love with this place." Photos by the Buffalo Bills
Bottom left: Before Friday's practice, the Bills gave a 12-year-old cancer survivor from Dunkirk a chance to be a part of the team. The Bills signed Mason Schrantz to a one-day contract and made him honorary captain for the practice. Mason's father, Dominick, told the team that a turning point in Mason's recovery from Stage IV lymphoma occurred when the Bills ended their 17-year playoff drought in December 2017, just two weeks after his diagnosis. Bottom right: The New York Yankees led most of the way against the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday, but closer Clay Holmes could not seal the deal, as he gave up a go-ahead two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the 8th inning, resulting in a 4-3 loss. The Yankees started the season 49-16, but since then they have gone 21-21, and the Houston Astros are breathing down their neck for the best record in the American League. Photo by USA Today
