Saturday Sports Update
Top: Dunkirk High School concludes its boys basketball regular season today, and the Marauders will be looking to record their second straight win when they take on visiting Chautauqua Lake. Dunkirk's last contest was a 68-64 win over Silver Creek, which ended a 16-game losing streak. Senior Lorenzo Lewis (left) will look for another big game after he scored 22 points and grabbed 16 rebounds in Thursday's win, while sophomore Luis Rodriguez (right) is coming off a 21-point effort. Bottom left: Some good news for New York Yankees starting pitcher Nestor Cortes ahead of the upcoming Major League Baseball season. Earlier in the week, Cortes withdrew from the World Baseball Classic after he was diagnosed with a hamstring strain, but he wound up throwing a bullpen session on Friday in Florida, which puts him on track to begin the new season. Cortes was one of the surprise performers on last year's Yankees team, posting a 12-4 record and a 2.44 ERA. File photo
Bottom right: Football season may be over, but one local varsity program is getting a boost as it looks to "flip the script" after going 3-20 over the past three seasons. A group of parents have organized the DKNY Football Club to help Dunkirk High School players prepare for the 2023 season with offseason workouts. Sunday will be the organization's second workout, which will feature new head coach Edwin Gomez and University at Buffalo quarterback Cole Snyder.
