Saturday Sports Update

Top left: The Buffalo Sabres had been playing some pretty ugly hockey over the past couple of weeks, but that didn't show on Friday in a 5-4 win over the New Jersey Devils, snapping a four-game losing streak.  Alex Tuch scored twice and had an assist for the Sabres, who led 5-2 after two periods before holding on for the victory at the KeyBank Center.  Buffalo begins the today six points of an Eastern Conference wild card spot as they prepare to face the New York Islanders, one of the teams they are currently chasing.  Photo by the Buffalo Sabres

Top right: For the first time since seeding began, the NCAA Tournament will not have a single number 1 seed involved in the Elite Eight.  On Friday, the two remaining top seeds lost in the Sweet 16; Miami took down Houston 89-75, while San Diego State rallied to upset Alabama 71-64.  The Elite Eight tips off tonight, with the first two spots in the Final Four up for grabs.  Photo by the University of Miami

Bottom left: The New York Yankees' pitching staff has been banged up during spring training, and their starting rotation will likely be missing another arm when the new MLB season gets underway next week.  Yankees manager Aaron Boone announced today that right-hander Luis Severino will likely miss his first scheduled start of the season after he was diagnosed with a low-grade lat strain. Severino sustained the injury while working out after his most recent start in Florida.  Photo by USA Today

Bottom right: Three Dunkirk High School girls basketball players received CCAA Division 1 West all-league honors for this past season.  Senior Ana Rodriguez, shown here hoisting a shot during a home game against Olean, was named to the league's Second Team, while teammates Molly Dicara and Alyssa Salerno both got Honorable Mention.  Meanwhile, Lady Marauders coach Quinn Bankoski was named the league's Coach of the Year after leading Dunkirk to a 10-win season, which followed a one-win campaign in 2021-2022.  Photo by Greg Larson
