Saturday Sports Update -- April 8, 2023

Sabres face 'Canes in potential elimination game...Yanks' bullpen falters in loss to Baltimore...and some pine trees bring play at Augusta National to a crashing halt.  More details from Greg Larson on today's Saturday Sports Update...

Saturday Sports Update

Top left: The Buffalo Sabres are coming off a wild win over Detroit, but they have not gained any round in the NHL's Eastern Conference playoff picture.  With five games left, the Sabres remain six points out of a wild card spot, and they need a least one point today in order to stay in the hunt.  The Sabres will get a visit from the Carolina Hurricanes, with the puck dropping at the KeyBank Center at about 12:40 PM.  Photo by the Buffalo Sabres

Top right: New York Yankees starting pitcher Clarke Schmidt had a tough outing on Friday.  Against the Baltimore Orioles, Schmidt walked three batters and gave up four runs in 3 1/3 innings in a no-decision.  The Yankees were able to rally from a 4-0 deficit, but the bullpen gave up three unanswered runs as the Bronx Bombers lost the series opener 7-6.  Photo by USA Today

Bottom left: A scary moment on Friday during Round 2 of the Masters.  Late in the afternoon, severe weather at Augusta National featured high winds that toppled multiple giant pine trees near the 16th hole, where spectators were gathered.  However, no one was injured in the incident.  The severe weather did cause the suspension of play for the rest of the day; the round finished up this morning, with Brooks Koepka leading the pack at -12.

Bottom right: Devon Levi, who made his NHL debut with the Buffalo Sabres last week, received the Mike Richter Award on Friday as college hockey's top goalies.  It's the second year in a row the Northeastern product earned the award after posting a nation-best .933 save percentage and tied for third in shutouts and saves.  Photo by the Buffalo Sabres
