Early offense propels Gowanda to baseball win over Fredonia...Sabres finish their season with a road win...and the Yankees fail to hold a late lead in loss to Twins.  More details from Greg Larson on today's Saturday Sports Update...

Saturday Sports Update

Top: Fredonia defeated Gowanda to open the league portion of its high school baseball season on Wednesday.  But two days later, the Billies received some payback as the Panthers recorded a 9-5 victory on Fredonia's home field.  Leading the offensive attack for Gowanda was catcher Blake Herman (left), shown here swinging at a pitch from Matt Cash.  Herman went 3-for-4 with two RBI and was a home run short of the cycle.  Meanwhile, Fredonia was held to just four hits on the day, and Carter Capozzi (right), shown here getting ready to pitch to Colin Crowell, tossed four shutout innings to get the win.  Photos by Greg Larson

Bottom left: The Buffalo Sabres may not be going to the playoffs, but they close out their season Friday night with a 5-2 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets.  Casey Mittelstadt (right) had a goal and an assist in the win, extending his streak of consecutive games with a point to six.  The Sabres finished the season with 42 wins, their highest total since the 2010-2011 season.  Photo by the Buffalo Sabres

Bottom right: The New York Yankees led after seven innings Friday night, but the bullpen could not seal the win.  Clay Holmes gave up a two-run double to Carlos Correa in the top of the 8th inning to send the Bronx Bombers to a 4-3 loss at Yankee Stadium.  New York has struggled so far in its four-game set against the Twins; the first game was an 11-2 setback on Thursday.  Photo by Newsday
