Lucas no-hits Dunkirk in Fredonia softball win...Billies clobber Southwestern on baseball diamond...and the Yankees fall short at the Trop. More details from Greg Larson on today's Saturday Sports Update...
Saturday Sports Update
Top: Fredonia junior Jordan Lucas has developed into one of the top players in Section VI. Last week, she threw a perfect game in a win over Southwestern. On Friday, she threw another no-hitter as her team routed Dunkirk 12-0 in a game that was called after six innings. Lucas recorded 14 strikeouts -- including 10 in a row at one point -- and allowed only one baserunner in the game. She also helped her cause at the plate by going 3-for-4 with three RBI, including a two-run single that was part of a 10-run 6th inning for the Lady Billies. Photos by Greg Larson
Bottom: The New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays had an entertaining and contentious series-opening contest on Friday at St. Petersburg. The Yankees erased an early deficit when Harrison Bader (left) hit a three-run home run to tie the game at 4-4, but a double by Wander Franco (right) scored what proved to be the game-winning in the bottom of the 7th inning to hand the Bronx Bombers a 5-4 loss. Both teams are at opposite ends of the American League East standings, with the Rays in first place at 27-6 and the Yankees in an uncharacteristic last place at 17-16. Photos by USA Today
