Litter Patrol Volunteer at Chautauqua Gorge State Forest iCal

Sunday, March 3 2024 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM

Morgan Duke Conservation Society has a volunteer stewardship agreement with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Region 9 to help protect the Chautauqua Gorge State Forest's environment and ecosystem. Chautauqua Gorge State Forest is popular with visitors on summer weekends, and litter can build up when not picked up. Volunteer Position Summary Volunteers are responsible for visiting Chautauqua Gorge State Forest, often picking up litter and trash from the Day Use Area and Camping Area at Chautauqua Gorge State Forest on Hannum Road. Volunteers would also be provided with data collection sheets to record what kind of garbage has been picked up and how many bags have been collected, and they can write down any concerns or feedback. RESPONSIBILITIES Volunteers should visit Chautauqua Gorge State Forest often, including after major holidays Memorial Day, Fourth of July weekend, Labor Day, and Columbus Day, to pick up litter. With enough advance notice, DEC may coordinate the removal of collected trash. Otherwise, collected trash should be removed by volunteers and disposed of properly. (Volunteers should notify the steward at least 48 hours in advance) As soon as possible after discovery, the volunteer will report unsafe conditions to the Department contact or the steward. Volunteers should always stay in communication with Morgan Duke Conservation Society, and they should notify Morgan Duke Conservation Society of any concerns or feedback about the volunteer program; if a volunteer no longer wants to volunteer, they should notify Morgan Duke Conservation Society. There must be at least two adult volunteers always present when a minor volunteer is working.
