Fredonia High School's previous two softball seasons ended with the Lady Hillbilles falling one game short of a spot in the New York State tournament. On Wednesday at Gowanda High School, they finally got over that hump, and they did it in convincing fashion. In a game broadcast on WDOE, the Class B-1 champions defeated Class B-2 champion Wilson by a 12-0 score in the Section VI Class B crossover game.
Fredonia (21-0) got on the board in grand fashion in the bottom of the 1st inning. Danielle Palisin singled, Jordan Lucas reached on an error, and Jaelyn Davis singled to load the bases with one out. That set the stage for 8th-grader Jenny Fryberger, who launched a grand slam over the fence in right center field to give the Lady Billies a 4-0 lead. The carnage continued in the 2nd inning, with Fredonia adding three more runs. Junior Rihanna Benner led off the bottom of the 3rd inning with a solo home run to make it an 8-0 ballgame, and after a scoreless 4th inning, the Lady Billies finished off the contest with a four-run 5th inning. Palisin made the score 10-0 with a two-run double, and after another run came across, freshman Callie Draggett drew a walk with the bases loaded to end the game via the 12-run mercy rule.
Danielle Palisin went 3-for-4 at the plate in the win for Fredonia, including two doubles and three RBI. Jenna Fryberger successfully reached base in all four of her plate appearances, going 2-for-2 and adding a pair of walks to go with her four RBI. Senior Jaelyn Davis also had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with a pair of runs driven in. And senior Jordan Lucas tossed another no-hitter; she allowed one walk and a hit batter and struck out 11 Wilson (13-10) batters. Lucas currently has a streak of 45 consecutive scoreless innings.
Fredonia's next opponent will be Wellsville, the top-ranked Class B team in New York State. Those two teams will square off in the Far West Regionals at Webster Schroeder High School on Saturday at 10:00 AM.
