New York residents who go to the polls will now be able to legally receive refreshments while waiting in line to vote. On Saturday, Governor Kathy Hochul signed legislation repealing a section of the state's Election Law that allowed for criminal penalties against individuals who provided items of small value to voters at polling sites, including food and water. Hochul says the new law allows voters to receive those refreshments without infringing on their right to cast their vote or discouraging voters from participating in any given election. The law comes as voters across the state get ready to cast their ballots for Tuesday's primaries during a heat wave that will see heat index values climb as high as 110 degrees in parts of the state.
