Defense was the name of the game in Tuesday's Section VI Class C boys basketball semifinal between Westfield and Wilson. In the end, the Wolverines were able to generate enough offense to take down the top seed in the bracket. In a game broadcast on WDOE, Westfield secured a spot in a sectional final for the third year in a row with a 40-30 victory over the Lakemen at Jamestown Community College.
The difference between both teams was just one point at the end of the 1st quarter, but then Westfield (13-9) took control with a 12-0 run in the 2nd quarter. A three-pointer by Logan Baum and a couple of buckets by Grant Beadle highlighted that stretch, and the Wolverines entered halftime up 25-16. Wilson (19-3) quickly trimmed that difference down to five points early in the 3rd quarter, but that's as close as the Lakemen would get the rest of the way. Westfield led 32-24 after three quarters, and in the 4th quarter, the Wolverines allowed just one made field goal to close out the victory.
Grant Beadle established his presence down low for Westfield. He led all scorers with 12 points, grabbed 16 rebounds and blocked five shots in the win. Braylon Swanson added nine points for the Wolverines, who will face Global Concepts on Saturday at 4:00 PM at JCC. Meanwhile, Wilson was held to just 18% shooting from the floor. Aiden Neumann led the Lakemen with 11 points.
