Westfield earned a spot in the Section VI Class C boys basketball championship game with a strong defensive showing in its semifinal contest against Wilson. On Saturday, though, the tables were turned on the Wolverines, who were victimized by an up-tempo defense from their opponent. In a game broadcast on WDOE, Westfield's quest for back-to-back sectional titles came up short in a 54-45 loss to Global Concepts at Jamestown Community College.
Global Concepts (18-4) gave Westfield (13-10) plenty of trouble in the first half with their pace. After four early lead changes, the Gators took control with a 10-0 run in the 1st quarter, with Eric Davis accounting for eight of those points. Nolan Anderson made a three-pointer at the end of the 1st quarter to bring the Wolverines within 21-16, but they did not make another shot from the floor for the rest of the half. Westfield went the next 10:04 without a field goal as Global Concepts grew its lead to 45-28 by the end of the 3rd quarter. The Wolverines managed to get within striking distance after two of the Gators' starters fouled out in the 4th quarter, but they didn't have enough.
The Gators were led by Jaiden Bennefield's 21 points, and Eric Davis added 15 points for the victors. For Westfield, senior Grant Beadle scored 17 points, including 10 in the 4th quarter; and Nolan Anderson tallied 13 points in a losing cause.
