Effort to Control Seagull Population Resumes in Dunkirk's Business District

A federally-backed effort to curb the seagull population in the City of Dunkirk's Business District is moving ahead this year after a pause in 2025. The Dunkirk Common Council recently okayed a measure for the city to enter into an agreement with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services to remove seagull eggs and nests from the plaza on East 4th Street for 2026. A total of 10 property owners in the area will reimburse the city for the wildlife management project, which will cost up to $6,816. The USDA will remove the seagull eggs and nests every two weeks now through July.
