Overdose Deaths in New York Have Fallen 45% Since 2022

Deaths from drug overdoses in New York State have declined by approximately 45% since 2022. Governor Kathy Hochul made the announcement on Monday as the state marks International Overdose Awareness Day. According to data compiled by the CDC, fatal overdoses fell from more than 6,630 individuals (approximately 18 people each day) since 2022 to 3,775 individuals (approximately 10 people each day) in 2025. Hochul touted her administration's investments in programs and services to address drug addiction and the overdose epidemic, saying they are making a difference. In Chautauqua County, fatal drug overdoses declined by 51% from 2023 to 2024. The county's Health Department says that progress reflects the impact of prevention efforts, expanded access to treatment and recovery services, harm reduction strategies, and the dedication of community partners working together.
