Gas Prices Rise During Labor Day Holiday Weekend

Monday marked the highest gas prices ever for the Labor Day holiday. According to the AAA, the nationwide average on Labor Day was $4.15 per gallon, which is up by about seven cents from a week ago. New York State saw its average climb by just over 10 cents to $4.32. And the average at the pump in Chautauqua County grew by more than eight cents to $4.36. One year ago, the national and state averages were $3.19 and $3.26, respectively.

Until this year, the national average was never above $4.00 per gallon on Labor Day; the previous record for the holiday was $3.82 back in 2012. Continued volatility in the Strait of Hormuz has pushed crude oil prices up. As of Tuesday morning, oil prices ranged from $94-99 per barrel. AAA adds that diesel prices have reached an all-time high, climbing 30 cents to $5.90 per gallon over the past week.

AAA of Western and Central New York (AAA WCNY) reports the following regional averages:

  • Batavia - $4.28 (up eight cents from last Monday)
  • Buffalo - $4.28 (up six cents from last Monday)
  • Elmira - $4.20 (up 13 cents from last Monday)
  • Ithaca - $4.28 (up six cents from last Monday)
  • Rochester - $4.27 (up three cents from last Monday)
  • Rome - $4.30 (up seven cents from last Monday)
