Trustees Discuss Measure to De-Flock Fredonia

The Village of Fredonia will consider a resolution to end the use of existing Flock cameras on village property and ban them without prior consent. This comes after two Flock cameras in the village were installed through a contract with the Chautauqua County District Attorney's office. During a Village Board workshop on Monday, Trustee Christine Cruz-Keefe said she opposes mass surveillance and also noted that the village was never given prior notice about the cameras. Tim Mulholland echoed her concerns and also indicated that he probably wouldn't feel any differently about opposing Flock if trustees were involved in the process...

Tim Mulholland: concerns over security, lack of consultation

Two other trustees later voiced concern over how data collected by Flock is being used. Ben Brauchler thinks the way it's being handled locally is "pretty reasonable," but he noted that the data is available to "a lot of people"...

Ben Brauchler: comfortable if a warrant is required

District Attorney Jason Schmidt has touted the use of the technology as a means to help solve crimes and find missing people. The two Flock cameras in the village are among 10 in the Dunkirk-Fredonia area.
