The Village of Fredonia, in coordination with the Chautauqua County Health Department, have issued a boil water order for all Fredonia water customers, effective immediately. A conserve water order remains in effect. The latest boil order is due to high turbidity levels and treatment deficiencies within the village's water system. According to the Health Department, the water entering the village's water treatment plant has high levels of organic material that is causing problems with the plant's filtration system. Due to multiple days of increased wear on the filtration equipment, including the aging filter media, the turbidity levels of the treated water do not meet NYSDOH safety standards even after the water passes through the filters.
Customers are advised to bring water to a rolling boil for at least one minute, then let it cool before using for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth, making ice, food preparation and washing produce, and preparing baby formula. Water samples will be sampled and tested after turbidity levels stabilize. The order will remain in place until testing confirms the water is safe.
