James M. Schnarrs, Sr., 82, of Dunkirk passed away suddenly following a long illness at home on Thursday, October 8, 2026. He was born in Niagara Falls on October 5, 1944, son of the late Bud and Hilda (May) Schnarrs.
James worked at Mount St. Mary's Hospital in Lewiston for 38 years. In his free time, he enjoyed hunting and fishing, playing cards -- particularly Rummy -- and attending classic car shows and gun shows. He was a devoted Pittsburgh Steelers fan, enjoyed watching WWE, and had a special fondness for animals.
James was a quiet, reserved man who lived a simple life and kept to himself. He found enjoyment in his personal interests and the simple pleasures of everyday life.
James is survived by his loving daughter, Tammy (Norm) Barner; grandchildren, Michelle, Ashley, Anthony (Rebecca) and Shawn; former spouse, Christina Gallardo-Schnarrs; and two nieces. In addition to his parents, James is preceded in death by his wife, Carol J. (Woods) Schnarrs; son, James M. Schnarrs, Jr.; an infant son; and his brother, Bill Schnarrs.
Relatives and friends are welcome to attend calling hours on Wednesday, October 14 from 4:00-7:00 PM at the McGraw-Kowal Funeral Home, 736 Central Avenue in Dunkirk. Prayer services will begin at 4:00. Interment will be held privately in Acacia Park Cemetery in Tonawanda.
