Norman G. Schauer

Norman G. Schauer, 89 years of age, of Summerfield, FL, formerly of Gowanda, went to be with his heavenly Father on Wednesday, February 15, 2017.

Norman was born on May 21, 1927 in Kane, PA to Norman Phillip Schauer and Ruth Beatrice (Brown) Schauer.

Norman was the second child of five children, the late Eugene A. Schauer, late Shirley Smith, late Gloria Schauer, late Joyce Clabeau and Beverly Steinmetz. Norm married the love of his life, Pauline Mae Bowers (deceased), on September 17, 1949. Together, they had three children, Patricia Lynn (John) Poreba, Deborah Lee (Michael) Snodgrass and Brian Norman Schauer. They had five grandchildren, Donald J. (Michele) Loretto, Timothy M. (Lori) Loretto, Michael J. Loretto, Britanie T. (Rex) Furey and B. Jacob Schauer. They also had 10 great-grandchildren, Alexis, Daniel, Abigayle, Tanner, Christian, Matthew, Zachary and Breanna Loretto and Ryder and Blakely Furey.

After Norm graduated from high school in 1945, he was drafted into the United States Navy and served aboard the battleship USS Wisconsin. Norm worked several jobs before starting at the Ford Stamping Plant in Woodlawn, NY as an electrical apprentice. He graduated his apprenticeship in May of 1954 as a full journeyman electrician and then retired in October 1980.

He stayed very active his entire life. He loved to hunt and fish. He also loved golf and as early as 1941 he won a "Caddy Tournament" at the Gowanda Country Club. He was always interested in woodworking and made numerous pieces of furniture. Throughout the years, Norm and Pauline traveled extensively, living in Colorado for several years, then Idaho and ending up in Florida since 1993. One of his greatest pleasures was to play cards with his children and grandchildren.

Norm and Pauline were married for over 64 years. He always said he had a beautiful life, a beautiful wife and a wonderful family. He truly is looking forward to going to his forever home with his Heavenly Father.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, February 23 from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Mentley Funeral Home, located at 105 E. Main Street in Gowanda. A celebration of life service will be held on Friday, February 24 at 11 a.m., with Pastor Kenneth Pratt officiating.
